Análisis de Lightyear (2026): ¿es el bróker adecuado para su forma de invertir?
Lightyear is one of the few investing apps in Europe that immediately feels different — not because it has the most features, but because almost everything unnecessary has been removed. Here's our full 2026 review after opening an account and testing it ourselves.

Why Lightyear feels different
Lightyear doesn't try to look like a professional trading terminal. It doesn't offer every product under the sun. It doesn't try to grab your attention with constant prompts, top movers and trending stocks. Almost everything unnecessary has been removed — and that's the entire point.
After testing the platform ourselves, the first impression was very clear: this is one of the easiest investing apps in Europe to understand. Not the most advanced. Not the largest. Not the cheapest in every category. But one of the easiest to actually use.
InvestBeacon Tested
We opened a Lightyear account ourselves to evaluate the onboarding, interface and day-to-day usability. Account opening took under 5 minutes. Identity verification was straightforward. The interface felt clean, calm and beginner-friendly. Deposits were easy to understand and the app made it very clear which currency account we were using at any moment.
A lot of investing platforms look good in screenshots. Fewer feel genuinely comfortable when you're opening an account for the first time. Lightyear does.
InvestBeacon Insight
For beginners, simplicity is not just a convenience — it's a risk reducer.
The easier it is to understand what you're buying, what currency you're using and what fees apply, the less likely you are to make avoidable mistakes.
Who is Lightyear actually built for?
Lightyear is built for investors who want investing to feel simple without feeling childish. It's easy enough for a first-time investor to understand, but still serious enough for someone building a real portfolio.

⭐⭐⭐☆☆

Free ETF investing
If your long-term strategy revolves around ETFs, Lightyear is one of the cheapest platforms in Europe. ETF purchases are currently commission-free. Whether you're buying a global ETF every month or gradually building a diversified portfolio, there are no brokerage commissions on ETF trades.
Low investing costs matter most when they're repeated hundreds of times over many years. Saving €1 once isn't life-changing. Saving it every month for the next twenty years is a different story.
Stock trading fees
Lightyear's pricing for US stocks is one of the strongest we've seen among beginner-friendly brokers — 0.10% per trade, with a $0.10 minimum and a $1 maximum. For European stocks, most euro-denominated orders cost €1, while other European markets are generally 0.10% with market-specific minimums.
There are no complicated pricing tiers to learn. Everything is designed to remain predictable.

Multi-currency accounts
This is a feature that deserves far more attention. Instead of forcing every investment through a single currency account, Lightyear lets you hold separate balances in EUR, USD and GBP. If you've already converted euros into US dollars, those dollars stay as dollars — you're not forced to convert them back after every transaction.
It's a small feature that becomes increasingly valuable the more you invest internationally.
InvestBeacon Insight
Most investors focus on trading commissions.
Experienced investors pay just as much attention to currency conversion costs. Over the long term, both matter.
Money Market Funds for idle cash
Lightyear has also introduced access to Money Market Funds. Rather than leaving idle cash sitting inside your account, eligible investors can allocate it to MMFs denominated in EUR, USD or GBP. This isn't a replacement for a long-term investment portfolio — it's designed for money you expect to use in the near future but don't necessarily want sitting uninvested.
Important distinction: Money Market Funds are investment products, not bank savings accounts. Their returns can fluctuate and they don't provide the same protections as cash deposits.
The FX fee — Lightyear's biggest compromise
No broker is perfect. For Lightyear, the biggest trade-off is foreign exchange. Currency conversions inside the platform currently cost 0.35%. Compared with Interactive Brokers — or even Trading 212 for many users — that's relatively high.
If you mainly invest in euro-denominated ETFs, this may have very little impact. If you regularly buy US stocks, however, FX costs become much more noticeable over time.
Pro Tip — Avoid the 0.35% FX fee entirely
One of the smartest ways to reduce FX costs is to convert your money before it reaches Lightyear.
During our testing, we confirmed that Lightyear supports deposits in multiple currencies. That means if your bank — or a service such as Revolut — offers cheaper foreign exchange than Lightyear's 0.35% conversion fee, you can convert your euros into US dollars first and then deposit USD directly into your Lightyear account. For investors regularly buying US stocks, this simple optimisation can meaningfully reduce investing costs over the years.
Deposits, withdrawals and ongoing fees
You can fund your Lightyear account via SEPA bank transfer, debit card, Apple Pay and Google Pay (where supported). SEPA transfers are free; instant card deposits may incur fees after the free allowance. For most long-term investors, bank transfers are the more cost-effective choice.
There are no monthly platform fees, no inactivity fees and no custody fees on standard investing accounts. That makes Lightyear an attractive buy-and-hold platform — you can invest regularly without ongoing maintenance charges quietly eating into your portfolio.
Is Lightyear safe?
Safety should be evaluated through regulation and operational structure — not company age alone. For European clients, Lightyear operates through Lightyear Europe AS, an investment firm authorised and supervised by the Estonian Financial Supervision and Resolution Authority (Finantsinspektsioon). UK clients are served through a separate FCA-authorised entity.
Like other regulated European investment firms, client investments are held separately from the company's own assets. This principle — known as asset segregation — is one of the most important protections available to investors. If the broker itself encounters financial difficulties, client securities are not treated as company assets.

Opening a Lightyear account
Onboarding is one of Lightyear's strongest areas. In our testing, account opening took under five minutes — one of the fastest experiences we've encountered among European brokers. The entire process is digital and requires a passport or national ID, basic personal information, tax identification number (where required), identity verification and a funding method.

Lightyear vs the competition
Lightyear vs Trading 212
Both are excellent. Trading 212 gives you more — more ETFs, more automation, Pies, AutoInvest, community features. Lightyear takes the opposite approach and removes anything inessential. If you enjoy building customised portfolios, Trading 212 feels more powerful. If you simply want an elegant investing experience, Lightyear is difficult to beat.
Lightyear vs Trade Republic
Trade Republic increasingly positions itself as a bank that also happens to offer investing — savings, interest, cards, cashback, private markets. Lightyear feels much more focused: investing, nothing more, nothing less. If you want an all-in-one financial app, Trade Republic has the edge. If you want a dedicated investing platform, Lightyear makes a compelling case.
Lightyear vs Interactive Brokers
Interactive Brokers is built for experienced investors; Lightyear is built for people who want investing to feel approachable. IBKR gives you institutional-grade tools; Lightyear gives you institutional-grade simplicity. As your investing needs become more sophisticated, you may eventually outgrow Lightyear — and that's perfectly okay. Not every broker needs to be your forever broker.
Where Lightyear still has room to improve
A significantly broader ETF catalogue
Lower FX conversion fees for international investors
More advanced portfolio analytics
Richer research and educational tools
More sophisticated order types for experienced investors
None of these are major flaws today. But they're the areas where competitors still hold an advantage.
Pros and cons at a glance
Free ETF trading
Highly competitive US stock pricing (0.1%, capped at $1)
True multi-currency accounts in EUR, USD and GBP
Money Market Funds for idle cash
One of the cleanest, most beginner-friendly apps in Europe
Onboarding in under 5 minutes
No platform, custody or inactivity fees
Smaller ETF catalogue than larger brokers
0.35% FX fee is higher than IBKR or Trading 212
No options, futures or advanced order types
Limited research and analytics tools
Our final verdict
Lightyear proves that a broker doesn't need hundreds of features to be genuinely excellent. The onboarding takes minutes. The interface is among the best we've seen. Pricing is transparent. Multi-currency support is genuinely useful. Money Market Funds add flexibility for uninvested cash. And the overall experience feels calm, polished and thoughtfully designed.
Lightyear strips investing back to what actually matters — and does it exceptionally well.
The smaller ETF catalogue and relatively high FX fee are real trade-offs worth considering. But for investors focused on building a long-term portfolio of quality ETFs and stocks, those drawbacks may be outweighed by how enjoyable the platform is to use. Lightyear isn't the broker with the most features — it may simply be one of the easiest brokers to live with.
